Its ancestors were developed from the Roman mastiff-type war dogs that traveled with the army, driving and protecting cattle and participating in many campaigns. When crossbred with local canines, these dogs produced working breeds suited to the local climate. Strength and intelligence of the ancestors have made all their descendants very versatile. In Germany, the descendants of the Roman dogs were used to bring the herds to the butcher for sale and to guard the purses of money.
